The modem drivers are installed because the Sprint Media Manager needs the device in modem mode in order to get the ESN and other information necessary to activate the device.

Don't waste your time trying to get this to work - it's also disabled at the network level. It looks like sprint decided not to support it. If I'm not getting phone as modem then I might just go with an iPhone instead.
