When news came that Sega was porting Virtua Racer and Virtua Fighting to their home systems, everyone wet themselves with joy. When the 32X was launched, Virtua Racing recieved a minor graphical overhaul compared to its Genesis breatheren, and had an additional cart. The Sega Saturn got Virtua Fighter, but the game showed its obvious buggy-side, and gamers were without a true home version of Virtua Fighter.
Then, for reasons to this day I will never know, Sega brought the popular 3D fighter to the 32X cartridge system. Given Sega of Japan's distaste of the system, coupled with the overal bad press the 32X was beginning to recieve, one wonders why Sega would bother. Whatever the reason, the game is the best version you'll find on any home console, the sole exception possibly being Virtua Fighter Remix for the Saturn years later. Those who doubt the power of the 32X have never seen Virtua Fighter running on it, and the graphics, though dreadfully primitive by modern standards and slightly less detailed than the arcade version, were immensely powerful compared to anything the SNES would have out in terms of 3D games, and was actually better than some PSOne games for a short time.
Each character is recognizable, the arenas are simple, but very nice, and the graphics move in tune with the controls. Speaking of controls, I'm not quite sure about them. They are very responsive, yet too simple for my tastes. Let me explain: There is the standard D-button, naturally, with the usual towards, away, jump, duck, leap to and leap fro movements. There's a guard button, a punch button, and a kick button. That's it. It's nice for some differences to not make everything the same, but very few special moves are performed anything like traditional fighters, and I'm left high and dry had it not been for an old EGM mag or GameFAQs.
